Solo Guitar Improvisations

'Nocturne' is a set of solo guitar improvisations based on small musical ideas extracted from works by Leo Brouwer, Roland Dyens, Benjamin Britten and Manuel Ponce.

This is the first release of Ars Improvisatoria, a de-composing/re-composing process that uses small motifs and musical ideas from XX and XXI century classical guitar works. After working and experimenting with different possibilities, the next step is to create a new improvised composition with that material. The recordings featured in 'Nocturne' can be thought of as a series of impromptus produced in this manner.

'Three Sketches' are three different takes based on a single pattern from Brouwer's 'Elogio de la Danza'. Three different approaches to the same musical idea.

'Petite Pièce' is a short piece based on a bar of music from 'Danse Caractérielle et Bachianinha' from 'Hommage a Villa-Lobos' by Dyens. A two voice polyphonic idea with rhythmic syncopation.

'Nocturne' is inspired by the third variation of Britten's Nocturnal Op.70 for guitar. It's loosely based on Britten's ostinato figure and in some of the polyrhythmic melodies on top. In general, a simple gentle piece with a tranquil mood.

'Ponciana' is a piece created from music by Ponce. Two ideas from his Sonata III, the first one from the opening bar of the Sonata has a harmonic minor sound, the second idea appears towards the middle of the first page, I use it to develop an arpeggio shape that interacts with an ostinato on the bass.

'Le Tombeau de Mr Dyens' is a second take on the same idea as 'Petite Pièce'. It resulted in a more intense and sober character piece than the first one. When looking for a title, the idea of naming it as 'Le Tombeau de Mr Dyens' paraphrasing the French baroque tradition as an homage to the late Roland Dyens came very naturally. An extraordinary player and composer that has always been a great source of inspiration to me.
